I know we can move on from last night’s game now, but I think the Barnet indiscipline last night just reinforces Jim Gannon’s general ethos around squad discipline and is a point worth highlighting below. #stockportcounty
Barnet players reacted furiously to #stockportcounty’s opening goal last night, appealing for offside and surrounding both the linesman and referee (see Reid clearly onside below).

Barnet defender Bilel Mohsni got a yellow card for dissent for his reaction.
Barnet manager Peter Beadle noted post-match that he will be without Anthony Wordsworth through suspension this weekend after his dismissal last night, and has another player suspended for picking up 5 yellows this season - PB appeared to rue this as ‘bad luck’. #stockportcounty
This isn’t specific to Barnet, but JG and #stockportcounty’s stance on good squad discipline highlights that it’s not ‘bad luck’ that any side regularly has players missing out with suspensions, and that that side goes on to struggle in games as a result.
If Barnet end up without Mohsni for a few games through suspension, or if he would have picked up a second yellow last night, one of those yellows to cause the suspension & leave a squad a player short has come about through a daft booking for dissent to a perfectly legit goal.
Of course things happen in heat of the moment ( #stockportcounty had a booking for dissent too last night, which JG voiced his disappointment over), but no coincidence that JG consistently has his sides topping Fair Play tables, & challenging at the top end of leagues as a result.
County topped both tables in 2019 & won NLN title. Sat around the top of both tables last season & are top of FP table so far this season and 2nd on PPG in the league.

JG’s also won three Fair Play awards in his managerial career (two with #stockportcounty, one with Dundalk).
There will always be bad luck with certain decisions, but managers can still clearly instil a strong sense of discipline to ensure that you maximise the number of players available to you as a side over a season.

Doing so has its rewards, & not doing so clearly causes problems.
