1. Flying in bombers and moving in aircraft carriers to deter pro-Iranian militias in Iraq is a terrible idea. We’ve been doing it for years and it needs to stop. https://www.politico.com/news/2020/12/10/us-military-potential-iranian-attack-444313
2. These militias don’t notice, don’t care and aren’t impacted by flying in strategic bombers or sending aircraft carriers to the Middle East. This has never worked to deter them.
3. you’re doing something wrong when you have to use a carrier strike group to deter a bunch of militias. That’s a massive mismatch of resources.
4. these military deployments are a response to a problem we wouldn’t have without Trump’s misguided policy of escalation. attacks on Americans in Iraq had ceased for years before Trump left the JCPOA & started “maximum pressure.“ another hidden cost of this reckless policy.
5. All these “defensive” actions in the Middle East position the US to potentially strike Iran and bring us into a conflict if Trump has another moment like the one he had in the Oval Office a few weeks ago. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/11/16/us/politics/trump-iran-nuclear.amp.html
6. I don’t believe a US strike on Iran is coming. However, we have 40 days left & this can’t be dismissed, especially after the precedent of how Trump, on a lark, ordered the Soleimani strike. We just don’t know what he might do.
