A thread on disability and race. Because people need to remember that:
1.) Black & nonwhite Hispanic ppl have had the highest likelihood of having a disability. Asian and white are the lowest & this was consistent across lifespan in 2014. https://www.accessliving.org/access-to-justice-a-cross-disability-perspective-on-reducing-jail-incarceration/background-access-to-justice/

2.) The disability justice movement has historically left out Black people and other POC who are marginalized in many ways & have been the most impacted by centuries of racial oppression, affecting access to healthcare, wealth, etc. #DisabilitySoWhite https://www.christianaobeysumner.com/blog/2019/7/26/disabilitysowhite-reflections-on-race-and-disability-on-ada-day
3.) Don't you dare talk about the relationship between disability and incarceration without stating that Black people, while only 16% of the US population, make up ~ 40% of prisons and jails and disabled Black people are disproportionately targeted with much worse sentences.
4.) This can't be iterated enough. Too often I see white disability advocates not be intersectional in their activism or acknowledge their white privilege.
Black & white students with disabilities do not have the same realities or outcomes. Read below. https://www.edweek.org/teaching-learning/opinion-the-ada-has-fallen-short-for-black-students-its-past-time-to-fix-that/2020/07

Amplify Black disabled activists. Period. Hold white disability justice advocates accountable for lack of intersectionality in their activism or acknowledgement of racial privilege. You can have a marginalized identity and still oppress others who are even more vulnerable.
Please join me in reading more about these topics and the intersection of racism, ableism, colonialism and white supremacy. I wonder how different our activism would look if it was consistently more intersectional. https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1057/9781137388476_9
@nolan_syreeta I also thought of you and our earlier discussions about racism & ableism. Would love to compile a list of Black Disabled activists & organizations that people can support both with following online & financially.
