I get many questions regarding the difference between my vision of utilitarianism vs Benthams. I am going to explain in a thread.
The problem with Benthams philosophy of utilitarianism is he only considers quantity of pleasure.
I consider both quantity and quality of pleasure.
I make a distinction between higher and lower pleasures. Higher pleasures are contain mental faculties that only a human can have. Lower pleasures are functions in the body that both humans and animals can experience.
Higher pleasures are more valuable than lower pleasures because of their "intrinsic superiority."
"“Of two pleasures, if there be one to which all or almost all who have experience of both give a decided preference, irrespective of any feeling of moral obligation to prefer it, that is the more desirable pleasure.”
