hello, korean american here; i wanted to clear up some misunderstandings in this thread; please take a look! (disclaimer: i am NOT attempting to justify ca through this thread, mocking other cultures is EXTREMELY disrespectful and members must be held accountable) https://twitter.com/exposednct/status/1318770045263151104
tw // ableism
jm uses the word 저능하다 here, which translates to “incompetent; moron; imbecile.” i’ve even consulted my mother, a korean native, and she says that it’s used to indicate low IQ, not to call someone a r****d
tw // colorism
having pale white skin is a beauty standard in korea, and it’s (sadly) common for people to tease others for having tanner complexions
tw // colorism
rather than holding prejudice against ppl w darker skin tones (definition of color*sm) the members are teasing hc for not meeting sk’s beauty standards. as koreans are extremely sensitive to their appearance, this teasing, again, is common occurrence
tw // colorism
i’m not saying i agree w judging people’s appearances based off a set of very specific standards. but what is happening here is similar, in a cultural context, to me getting teased by my US friends (who prefer having tan skin) for wearing sunscreen
and regarding the multiple videos where members call each other “burnt”: 탔다 in korean directly does directly translate to “burnt,” but it is also used to say that you got a sunburn
here is a great thread explaining dy using the word “탔다” (burnt: sunburnt) https://twitter.com/do1ezn/status/1337759946943807489
