Hello #medtwitter I am here once again to explain that if you write an insulin prescription for only your pt's average TDD, they will RUN OUT or have to ration at the end of the month. Insulin gets wasted in pump tubing, pen needle priming, equipment failures, etc.
This shouldn't be an argument every single time I, or any other patient with diabetes tries to get an adequate script. The amount a pump uses is MORE than the amount physically infused into a person, and your script should take that into account.
I'm going to continue repeating myself on this issue every time I have to justify this. We shouldn't have to worry about running out of a thing that everyone else produces naturally and in sufficient quantity.
Thanks to all who read this, and everyone sharing their experiences on the prescriber and pharmacy side of things. I think the least we can say this system is broken and pushes unnecessary stressors and barriers onto patients.
