I wonder if one reason we're seeing a conservative backlash against expertise in general relates to the decreasing male dominance of higher education and especially doctorates. (Source: 2015 Council of Economic Advisers report on the gender pay gap.)
This is also relevant to that conversation everyone's having about titles and sexism, natch.
To be more precise: sociologists have long argued that occupational prestige, pay etc. are likely to decrease as the %women goes up. See, e.g. https://academic.oup.com/sf/article-abstract/88/2/865/2235342
Also, I have to imagine there's a good feminist STS/history of science take on this (the declining prestige of science/expertise following women's entry, either overall or for specific fields) but I don't know it off the top of my head. Any recs?
