...in recent years, on average we will hit -20°C ~7 times before the new year.
-20°C Lows show up as early as early-November, but mid-December is more typical.
And some years (2019, 2002, 1997...) even wait until January for the first one.

...we did hit our first -19°C, though.
Last winter had a really late first -20°C on January 9th, but a really early first -19°C on November 11th.
2018-2019 didn't hit -19°C until December 30th, and in 2017-2018 it was December 24th.

...several of Environment Canada's nearby stations did cross the -20°C mark yesterday, with the Oliver station in the northeast down at 24.1°C.
(surprisingly the airport was only at -19.8°C)

...and for some of our neighbours, on December 13th: Calgary was down at -17.3°C
Winnipeg had its first -20°C at -20.1°C
And Regina was all the way down at -28.8°C
