My students have been posting a lot of interesting discussions online on Buddhism as part of their coursework. One really popular thread is about whether if robots and AI could attain Buddhist enlightenment. A thread

Itâs interesting that the vast majority of students believe that robots and AI, being human-made, cannot attain enlightenment. Many also expressed the sentiment that robots and AI are inferior to humans and other sentient beings when it comes to mental abilities. 2/6
However, a handful of students do point out that robots and AI might become just as sentient, if not more, than us human beings in the future, despite being made from human technology. 3/6
It has been fascinating to see how students respond to this question. I remember presenting with them with the AI Bodhisattva at Kodaiji back in early 2019 when it first made the news, and everyone showed fascination of course, but also a lot of discomfort with the idea. 4/6
This year, the threshold for the uncanny valley seems to have gotten higher. 5/6
I personally would like to remain open to the idea of AI sentience. I can never see AI, robots, and cyborgs in the same way again after Ghost in the Shell and Nier Automata.
