my new personality is just trying to get my favorite Tiktok account (who mostly just makes videos about interesting bodies of water) to make a video about Bayou Corne or Lake Peigneur
but until she does so, a treat for my non Louisiana followers!

Lake Peigneur is my favorite. In 1980 a Texaco drilling rig accidentally pierced a salt mine on Lake Peigneur in New Iberia. The lake drained into the mine, which was a huge underground cavern situation 🤷🏻‍♀️
It sucked in like 11 barges, a tug boat, the Texaco drilling rig and 65 acres of land. When the lake started to refill from the Vermillion Bay and Delcambre Canal, it created a 160 foot waterfall. Eventually the boats and other material that was sucked in started being ejected
the lake was freshwater, now it’s brackish. it was about 10 feet deep on average and now it ranges from 3-200 feet deep. Bayou Corne is it’s own adventure
okay let’s do Bayou Corne, just bc I wanna show y’all the video and I’m bored.

In 2012 a salt dome in Bayou Corne, owned by Occidental Petroleum and operated by Texas Brine Co. collapsed and created a GIANT SINK HOLE in Assumption Parish, Louisiana
this salt dome, the Napoleonville salt dome, has 53 different caverns and lays a mile below ground. Occidental drilled 100 feet from the nearest gas sheath which is legal but... bad, dangerous bad
So in 2012 the people who live near Bayou Corne reported that the ground was shaking and the bayou was bubbling. US geological survey recorded weird seismic activity and in August when people started smelling crude oil Jindal issued an evacuation order
well, they figured out that the salt dome collapsed. Sediment and water poured in, the caverns burped up gas and crude and long story short this giant sink hole is expanding to this day. They burned off 25 million cubic feet of gas, and in 2015 it had grown to about 34 acres
It still spits out methane and it basically destroyed the entire community that surrounded it. here’s a crazy ass video of when it started sucking things up
I am, without a doubt, the lamest person I’ve ever met. enjoy!
