Spent a lovely lunch break in a mad busy day talking to @sheffjournalism students & hopefully inspiring the next generation of court reporters https://twitter.com/sheffjournalism/status/1338877923189723139
One of the things I didn’t get round to today was how essential court reporting is and how there’s a major crisis where courts are going uncovered or only covered when there’s a really high profile case. There is, I think, a pretty serious democratic deficit where courts
across the country are not regularly covered. There are efforts being made to address this by the courts service and media organisations, but it’s going to take time and resources to fix it. Maybe a topic for another day, but worth considering when looking for work in future
that courts are always an interesting and varied source of news, so good court reporters are an asset to any news organisation. I also forgot to say, practice your shorthand! You can’t “cram” shorthand, it’s a pain, but it’s the coolest skill you’ll ever learn
Thank you again for listening today, have a happy Christmas as best we can manage this year, good luck with the exams in Jan and stick at it because this can be one of the most personally rewarding careers there is at times. Enjoy it!
