i recently realized that a lot of people are trying to get into narrative design via twine, and i wanted to share some faves that push the artistic possibilities of the medium. this is a non-exhaustive list: please also play other twine games.
so @BreakinBahiyya's twine games are what initially motivated me to make LIONKILLER. her games are absolutely fascinating because they challenge the idea of what we consider games, and what kind of experiences are suitable for a "game" https://bahiyya.itch.io/blood-under-the-bridge
i struggled with 1870 CYBERPUNK FOREVER ( @babbygoth) because i came in with the assumption that i was collecting all the info to solve a "puzzle" when it's actually about engaging with characters on their terms and not yours. https://satandaddy.itch.io/1870
kitty horror show's "hornets" was also an early inspiration about the consequences of the player's actions (which happened before you started playing). chilling, atmospheric, divine. https://kittyhorrorshow.itch.io/hornets
this is a newer one by @nessathewriter !!! jagged bone is a horror twine game about transformation, and it does not reward you for playing safe! it lures you into accepting monstrosity and i think that's rad. highly recommend multiple playthrus https://nessathewriter.itch.io/jagged-bone
growth is one of my fave things from @lizardengland, which practically shoves you towards its inevitable punchline. there's no reverence for the journey, but only the ending. https://lizengland.itch.io/growth
sweet penny breath ( @MSwampcroft) is not a straightforward romance and that is the core appeal! consent is complicated, messy, and not nearly as clearly delineated as most games want them to be. an ambitious game, but please heed the content warnings https://swampcroft.itch.io/sweet-penny-breath
anyway, i intentionally avoided super resource or illustration heavy games becuase i want folks to understand that you don't need those to make a thoughtful game! you just need an idea that can be fit into a short experience and some idea of the ratio between mechanics/prose
