We did a bunch of job interviews today for a postdoc position in my group, and we tried something different.

We gave all the candidates in advance all the questions we were going to ask. (Sent to them a week beforehand.)

The outcome was amazing! (1/3)
Detailed, thoughtful answers. Everyone putting their best foot forward. Everyone showcasing their experience and depth of knowledge. (2/3)
No gotcha moments. No awkward silences. No fumbling responses. Just an honest opportunity to evaluate what every candidate could offer.

I think all interviews should be like this. It’s certainly how I’m going to do things from now on. (3/3)
Here are the questions we asked.

Also, we locked in the questions before anyone on the panel began to read any applications or knew who the applicants were, to ensure that none of the questions were unconsciously tailored for (or against) any applicant.
