i made a puffin joke on the FBOL podcast twitter earlier and said to my husband “puffins are on my list of favorite birds” and he responded “with ‘all of them’” so now i will list my favorite birds
in no particular order!
puffins. nothing really amazing about them, just really quite cute.
buzzards. vultures in general, but i like common buzzards.
pigeons. as it turns out, no one knows how they “home.” people are really mean to pigeons, but they’re spectacular animals.
ospreys. they build nests out of sticks that can weigh over 150lbs
everyone knows corvids can use tools and recognize faces but did you know that jays can TRIANGULATE? they literally use distance to monuments to remember where they hid food, and how long ago!
cassowaries are “the world’s most dangerous birds” but really they’re fruitarian ratites that need their big, bony casks to push foliage out of the way when they run through forests
kiwi birds are the only birds whose nostrils are at the TIPS of their beaks. they sniff out worms and ants and termites.
the sarus crane is the tallest flying bird in the world. they’re about six feet tall.
and because we’re here: the shoebill. a fucking dinosaur.
i also greatly appreciate bowerbirds, who decorate their nests
