Today's #25DaysofFishmas contribution is the well known Betta or Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens). A common pet, but highly misunderstood. These fish should be in, at minimum, a 10-gallon tank. They can live in smaller tanks, but it is like keeping a human in jail...
People will survive in jail, but how healthy are they? How happy? The betta trade is also concerning, with mass breading, shipment in chemicals from Thailand to subdue them, and storage in small containers at pet shops. Many don't survive or have significant health issues...
I truly believe when I purchase a betta from a chain pet-shop that it is a rescue, not a support of the trade. The exploiting of these fish need to be reviewed, and basic education on how to keep bettas well framed...
