Didier Drogba Nostalgia: A Thread
For an entire generation of Chelsea fans who started following the game in the early 2000s, our first footballing idols were John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, and rightly so. The best period in Chelsea's history is undoubtedly 2004-2007 under Jose Mourinho
On the back of a successful season with Marseille in 2003/04 where he scored 19 goals in Ligue 1 and dragged them to the UEFA Cup final, Chelsea signed Drogba for 24 Million pounds, and in hindsight, what a deal!
4 PL Titles
4 FA Cups
3 League Cups
2 Community Shields
1 Champions League
2 Golden boots
Pl and Chelsea Legend. One of the best to ever do it
A haul of 10 goals and 5 assists in the PL in 2004/05 are not spectacular numbers, but Didier slowly found his feet in the PL. His power, hold up play and footballing brain allowed Gudjohnsen, Lampard, Duff and Robben to express themselves as Chelsea won the PL and League Cup
His first PL goal, a majestic header against Palace off a Babayaro cross was a sign of things to come, with important goals against PSG, Porto and Bayern in the CL run to the semis that ended in heartbreak against Liverpool. Jose was convinced that Didi was just getting warmed up
2005/06 saw Chelsea win the league at a canter, with Drogba chipping in with 16 goals and 15 assists in all competitions. His overall game improved in leaps and bounds, with a willingness to drop deep and play our wingers and Frank in. Drogba became a complete striker. Feared
Goals of all kinds, headers, runs off the shoulder of the last defender. Left foot, right foot. Dribbling past defenders and goal keepers for fun. 2005/06 marked the transition of Drogba from a prospect to a proper world class striker. Fav goal: header against City. Bridge assist
2006/07 is the season the world sat up and took notice of this beast. 33 goals and 11 assists all comps. Second in PFA Player of the Year. 4th in 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year. Both goals in the league cup final against Arsenal. Winner in FA Cup Final agnst Utd. Golden boot
The stats dont tell the full story. Absolute belter against Everton. Liverpool, where he controlled the ball on his chest, turned and blasted it past Reina. Went up against some of the best defenders in PL history and wiped the floor with them. Unplayable on his day
2007/08 saw Drogba upset with the departure of Mourinho and publicly profess a desire to leave Chelsea. A strong Champions league run under saw him commit to Chelsea, where we experienced heartbreak at Moscow. A combination of injuries and off field issues. Season to forget
Despite injuries, bad form and African Cup of Nations duty, Drogba finished the season with 15 goals and 7 assists in all comps. Match winner performances against City, Arsenal and Liverpool in the CL. Was supposed to take the crucial 5th pen in Moscow, but got sent off. Sad end
2008/09 was arguably Drogbas worst season at Chelsea. He battled injuries and missed games from August to December, and lost his place in the 11 to Anelka, Scolari's dismissal sparked a renaissance of sorts and he was crucial in Chelsea's run to the CL semis and FA Cup victory
Drogba scored against Juventus and Liverpool in the CL, and also scored the equalizer in the FA Cup final against Everton continuing his awesome record in big matches. Was red carded and suspended for calling Ovrebo a fucking disgrace after the Barca semifinal. Who can blame him
2009/10 under Ancelotti was undoubtedly Drogba's and Chelsea's best season in the PL. 37 goals and 15 assists in all comps. Golden boot. League and cup double. Scored in a final again, with the winner against Portsmouth. Lampard, Drogba, Malouda and Anelka set the league on fire
Double against Arsenal, winner against United, hattrick against Wigan, left boot belter against Stoke. I run out of superlatives to describe how good Didier was this season. Don Carlo built a attacking system around Drogba and Lampard's goal scoring exploits. My fav season
Drogba stuggled with injuried and malarial illness in 2010/11, but still finished with 13 goals and 19 assists in all competitions. Chelsea finished trophyless and Don Carlo was sacked. Favourite goal, delightful backflick against Arsenal and long range bullet against Bolton
A title charge was halted by a December slump which we never recovered from. Didier still scored against United in the CL quarters, but we conceded immediately to a Park Ji Sung goal and were knocked out. 19 assists show how complete a striker he was
2011/12 saw the AVB experiment which never looked like working. He benched Didier, JT and Drogba and lost the dressing room immediately. Goals against Leverkusen, and Valencia showed Didier's quality, but our PL campaign never recovered from the mid season slump.
AVB was sacked and in came Robbie Di Matteo, and what a turn around. Comeback win against Napoli, Benfica, a semi against Pep's Barca, Didier was colossal throughout. The final was the climax to a footballing journey that started in 2004, and how fitting that he scored the winner
Against a brilliant Bayern team, Chelsea left their hearts out on the pitch, with Lampard, Mikel, Cahill, Luiz and Drogba showing all their experience and nerves of steel. The header in the 88th minute made Chelsea fans across the globe believe and we were repaid and how!
When Didier stepped up for the pen, I remember how sick I felt. I couldnt bear to watch, my knees almost gave away. Didier Drogba, after all the pain and hurt of the past 8 years, strolled up to the spot and rolled it past Neuer like he couldn't give a damn!
The raw emotion Didier and the entire team showed after that victory flowed out of the TV screens to Chelsea hearts all over the globe. I've experienced emotion again in my life several times, but never like that night. That was Didier's gift to us. And for that, he has our heart
I see him slandered so often on this app, by kids who can never fathom the player he was. If you saw him week in week out you would now what he brought to the plate. He had fucking everything. Could drop deep and link up play. Could be the lone target man. Could run the channels
Didier Drogba was an absolute legend, and this is my small attempt to remember him. Thank you @didierdrogba for everything you did for us. Your fanboy forever
