Honestly I agree with this, an over-reliance on canon as the goal of a franchise is a killer (just look what it's done to the BIONICLE fandom). I do feel there's a fine line that can be walked where, as a storyteller, you can indulge in nostlagic joy from time to time, but (1) https://twitter.com/C4DNerd/status/1340152175884791808
not at the expense of the story you're telling. For me, Rogue One and (most of) Mandalorian have balanced this pretty well, while Episodes 7 and 9 didn't. I think this often puts me at odds with both extremes of the fanbase because as much as I love things like the Vader (2)
hallway scene, my favourite elements of modern Star Wars tend to be the character moments others dislike because they deviate from *their* vision of how X or Y would behave. (3)
Case in point, Luke not striking a single blow in the finale of Last Jedi and essentially sacrificing himself to try and save his nephew and let the Resistance escape Crait is one of the most Jedi things a Jedi can do, but at the time the net was ablaze with comlaints about (4)
how TLJ "didn't have a lightsaber duel", as if that was a mark of shame.
That's perhaps something Mando does, unfortunately, try to appease. As much as I've loved seeing Bo-Katan, Ahsoka and [SPOILER] again, the latter two ride that fine line very dangerously. (5)
Where I think Mando will succeed is if they make an impact on the story again in the future. It's quite a slow-burn show, and there's still time to fully integrate them.
Buuuut that's also unlikely to reconnect a fanbase that largely just wants a rinse/repeat of 4 & 5. (6)
Kind of lost track of where I was going with this, but I guess "Mando good, but future in question".
Maybe one day this damn franchise will take up less space in my head, but tbh even with all the bad that fans & critics alike bring to it, idk if I want that. (7)
