Robert of St.Albans was initially a crusader knight who came to the holy land with fervor and passion in his heart to wage the holy war against the Muslims. However, soon, after meeting with the locals and getting to know the Islamic customs and faith, he embraced it.
Later, after his conversion, he was made a general in Saladinâs army and he led contingents of troops at the decisive battle of Hattin in 1187. as well as participating in the siege and re-conquest of Jerusalem by the Muslims.
For his valiant deeds, Saladin granted him the permission to marry his niece. Sadly, according to the historical informations on him, he passed away shortly after the conquest of Jerusalem.
Robertâs conversion to Islam caused significant dismay among the Christians and sparked ill-will toward the Knights Templar in general.
