Not Puppets

Earlier this century, there was a (now infamous) social experiment conducted, known as the Stanford Prison Experiment. Initially, the outcomes suggested that merely being put into dehumanising environments would cause extreme behaviour of sadistic dominance or...
pacifist submission. After investigating the claims more closely, this was not the case. There was a lot more manipulation in place, including payment and coercion to behave in certain ways.

I was put in mind of this yesterday, when I began to see the bonded edges of unity...
crumble, and the involuntary participants in a manipulative experiment turn on each other.

I deplore the nature of control for so many reasons. I am disgusted when victims of manipulation are blamed for their emotional responses to their plight. But yesterday I wanted to...
scream, "STOP! PLEASE STOP!"

We can do little about the way the government have played everyone over the Christmas situation, but we should definitely remember who is to blame. Why on earth would we let Boris Johnson look on, like some evil scientist, while we turn on each...
other.

Throughout 2020, I have been proud to be a part of a profession who stands together against the attempts to manipulate and discredit us. I was proud to watch schools, not just willing but keen to, step up to help other key workers and those unable to work.

I have seen...
such determination to keep things going for our children and families (despite the media trying to make out that we are a bunch of lazy feckers). I have seen smiles on the faces of teachers who care for each other, stay strong for their children, when they are exhausted and...
working in conditions they know not to be safe (however much they try to sanitise their bubbles).

I have witnessed the never ending support towards those who are isolated, lonely, struggling with mental and physical health. I have seen how grief is shared, because people know...
that they have a massive support network to turn to.

When yet another government announcement has tried to hurt any one of us, we have stood together. Staff have constantly praised and thanked leaders. Primary have stood in support of Secondary and vice versa.
When some...
schools have had to close bubbles, or whole boroughs have had different restrictions forced upon them, others have sent words of support. We have not all experienced this year in the same way, but empathy and solidarity have shone through.

It is inevitable that there will be...
the occasional dig, debate or disagreement. There always is; even more so when emotions run high. However, we have had each other's backs, because we know that the government and the media have tried to manipulate us and create a warped view of our attitudes and behaviour.

We...
are better than that. Even in our tired states; even having had the rugs pulled out from under us yet again, we should not let them control our responses.

Whatever your thoughts are on mixing at Christmas; whatever part of the country you live in (and by the way, there isn't...
a line drawn along the middle of it), remember the empathy and remember the solidarity.

Yesterday, many of our colleagues and friends believed that they were going to be with their loved ones over Christmas. Today, many of them are facing Christmas alone. Some spent last...
night having heartbreaking phone calls with relatives, or avoiding doing so because they couldn't face the reality.
Those whose plans have not changed, should not look at such a sad situation and gloat. We are better than that.

We need to maintain our strength, empathy and...
solidarity, so that those in power do not think that they can control our behaviour along with everything else.

If anyone has been affected by yesterday's announcement, then my DMs are open. ♥ 🙏
