1. The government is making yet another mistake putting all its eggs in the vaccine basket. I talked about this risk of mutation and escape variants in this piece for @BylineTimes https://bylinetimes.com/2020/12/01/britain-cant-put-all-its-covid-eggs-in-the-vaccine-basket/
2. Whichever way one approaches this problem, there is only one sensible solution: #ZeroCovid
Instead of living with a norm of thousands of cases per day, treat every case of #Covid_19 seriously and work towards eradication.

3. This has been the approach of Taiwan, New Zealand, Vietnam and others. It involves strict border controls but allows much more domestic freedom than the UK is likely to have for the foreseeable future. https://twitter.com/adamhamdy/status/1316513055250026497
4. Use a comprehensive package of measures, rather than relying on magic bullets or moonshots. https://twitter.com/mackayim/status/1319901144836026368
5. If we do it right, life could be more of less back to normal by summer. But that would take leadership, communication and effective implementation. It would also involve measures that would be likely to be unpopular.
6. Isolation hotels, for example. @DanielFalush was derided for suggesting them, but they’ve worked in the countries that have used them.
It’s worth revisiting what he wrote in April. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/isolate-isolate-isolate-chinas-approach-covid-19-quarantine/

7. The Johnson government has made the mistake of assuming the best and preparing (badly) for the best. It has not been honest with people that there is no easy way out of a coronavirus pandemic. Johnson has assured people Christmas 2021 will be normal.
8. But he said the same thing about this year. Christmas 2021 can be normal, but only if we work really hard for it.
If we carry on with the dreadful ‘middle way’ which is slowly grinding our country into dust, the only path back to normality will be vaccines. https://twitter.com/adamhamdy/status/1315914586927837185

9. And there is no guarantee vaccines will be able to take us there. The government is gambling on an uncertainty and rejecting the certainty that’s worked elsewhere.
Matt Hancock suggests Tier 4 areas will have to stay under restrictions until the vaccine is rolled out. https://twitter.com/pippacrerar/status/1340581500715212800

10. Indefinite lockdown while hoping for deliverance. Doesn’t sound like much of a strategy. And what’s the plan if this is an escape variant? Or the vaccine can’t be rolled out quickly? Or doesn’t confer the necessary protection? Once again, the government is being shortsighted.
11. Take control of the situation. Stop being two steps behind this virus and work hard to get ahead of it. Change your strategy from this awful middle way to a clear #ZeroCovid approach. Vaccines will make it easier to achieve, but you don’t have to bet the country on them.
12. This government has shown a lack of imagination and foresight, so it may need help understanding the benefits of #ZeroCovid
Check out the @ZeroCovAlliance which has resources on its website. Write to your MP and share information with others to get this on the agenda.

13. Also worth following @CovidActionGrp and @endCOVID19 for good info on #ZeroCovid
We can’t afford another 2020. We need to save lives, protect our freedom and rescue the economy by doing what’s worked elsewhere. This is the prize that awaits us

14. Another example of the prize that awaits us.
