It’s a shocking weekend for local industry that two blockbusters couldn’t improve the bad situation of CBO in December - The Rescue and Wonder Woman 1984 just make $35.9M and $18.8M respectively. Currently, local audience do not express enthusiasm of watching movies in theaters.
Films like The Eight Hundred and My People, My Homeland have brought power and confidence to Chinese film industry since reopening. With more than 10 major new titles, it was believed that December would be a blast. For three consecutive weeks, CBO have been very weak.
Some industry veterans figure that The Rescue could lose $70M or more. Operation Red Sea, the previous work from director Dante Lam, earned nearly $600M box office revenue in China.
For WW84, it was an unforeseen result. I heard Warner Bros. expected the DC title to do $100M total(First WW made $90M). Some analysis firms predicted higher at one point. Right now, it‘s heading to $30M lifetime more or less, the lowest number of DC universe here.
