I know this sounds weird but I actually think the public needs to be subjected to a PR campaign about how nice the public is. I've sat in focus groups this year and there's a lot of, "of course I care about the community, but other people don't."
Individuals seem to believe in togetherness, kindness, and doing the right thing. But they also seem to be cynical about the capacity of people as a whole to express those things themselves. I think this affects their voting behaviour and relationship to politics more generally.
We talk a lot about how our biggest enemy is cynicism. But I don't think it's just cynicism about the ability of governments to change things, it's also cynicism about the human. I do think this makes people more drawn to authoritarian politics. (And yes I know about Adorno)
This is a perfect encapsulation of the phenomeon I was talking about! https://twitter.com/elsewhr/status/1341360725323886592
