I'm in a unique position to be extremely knowledgeable and experienced on this topic from all angles, Jason (who doesn't follow me so may not have that context.) This reply is the incorrect take on many levels and demonstrates a lack of knowledge and understanding of the industry https://twitter.com/mithridates22/status/1341456444181401608
- Reviewing is a service and any reviewer worth their salt puts in so many hours to create the content that the cost of the game adds up to a pittance/hour work.
- The cost of the game to a publisher for even a modest targeted audience is far outweighed by the awareness benefit
- Publishers don't send review copies to reviewers to whom they think they don't get value back.
- Fees can add up to more than the cost of the game to the reviewer - making the reviewer pay MORE than a consumer
- Publishers worth their salt understand the value of reviewers in an ever growing and crowded industry and will properly support that arm of the industry
- Consumers vastly benefit from a variety of content on a single game to help determine if the purchase is right for them
- Consumers who get upset or frustrated at "free games" for reviewers are the same who get upset at "paid content" putting both publisher and content creator in a ridiculous perception bind that is unfair, inaccurate, and that sets reviewers up for failure.
You can challenge me on this - but I promise you, there are very very few individuals in this industry who have more credibility on this topic than me.
