I've never seen most of the marvel superhero movies so I am taking it upon myself (per @heyonick's unintentional suggestion) to watch all 28 of them in the timeline order (not the order of release.) Wish me luck, it will take weeks.
So I watched the 1st Captain America and they reference Howard University and vibranium and I didn't know if this was the good Chris or the bad Chris but I have now been informed that it's the good Chris.
Okay I'm getting ready to watch Captain Marvel. I'm actually excited about this one I want to see how Marvel handles a woman led movie in comparison to Captain America that I just watched.
I really liked Captain Marvel I was a little confused at first. I hate the wig they put on her bestfriend. They just plopped it on her head.
I'm a student of Joseph Campbell and he taught mythology at a womens college for 30+ years and in the late 70s early 80s they started asking about women as the hero and he said that he foresaw women becoming heroes in their own story I think this is that which he spoke of.
I do find it interesting that she follows the monomyth to a T but it's inverted. Instead of an atonement with a father it's with the mother in the figure of Lawson for example.
About to start Iron man #1...idk why he gets so many movies but I'll find out soon
Just finished the first Iron Man and it was made during the islamophobia period of american film. The special effects seem kinda lackluster compared to today's films. Kinda predictable too but I can see why people like it very much a shoot up bang bang kinda movie
Also Tony Stark and Pepper are just Varrek and Zhu Li. Actually the whole Kuvera and the supersuit vs Korra storyline is this iron man movie. Wild to see the parallels.
I just finished Iron Man 2. The movie's not that good but Don Cheadle is a great replacement for Terrence Howard. I feel like this is a bridge movie to get the storyline to somewhere else. Also beef up SHIELDS involvement but I guess there's more to come later
I also could have done without the Elon Musk cameo but that's 2020 talking I don't know if I knew he was such a terrible person back then
Just finished the first Thor. I really liked it! Kenneth Branagh directed it *chef kiss* the storyline is basically The prodigal son with Norse mythology thrown on top. It wasn't that creative but directed beautifully and idris and the girl from two broke girls were a plus!
I could also go for a whole Thor spin off because who are his friends who come to save him what are their powers what's their backstory.
Just finished the avengers the first movie. (the hulk movies aren't on Disney plus so I feel like I'm was missing a bit of the storyline for the avengers) ultimately it felt like a rogue superhero group who don't melt well. They're not the xmen or the sups (from the boys)
Fury as the Professor X of the group, Captain America is the Cyclops etc... maybe the plot will thicken and make more sense as I continue to watch. Also the hawkeye guy adds nothing for me so far.
Watching them in the Marvel timeline order makes sense I couldn't imagine watching them as they were released year after year all scrambled and jumbled none of this would have made sense and I probably wouldn't have gotten this far. It was stupid for them to release it that way
About to watch Thor: The Dark World. So far Thor is my favorite out of the main avengers. So in sure I'll enjoy his trilogy more than Capt America or Iron man. It's very noticeable that there are no women trilogies.
Ok so this Thor was kinda all over the place and very dark (color wise) but I think it's key to getting to the intergalactic folks and infinity stone stuff. I hope the next thor is better.
Iron Man 3 is up next and then I don't have to watch anymore Tony Stark focused movies. Robert Downey Jr's acting is great but Tony Stark's personality is grating for 2 hours, no matter how many things he blows up.
Ok this iron man was kinda superfluous it didn't really add anything to you the storyline but whatever. I do wish pepper would have been able to keep her powers and become a superhero with Tony. Out of the 3 iron mans(men?) This was my 2nd favorite (I use that loosely)
About to watch Winter Soldier...here goes 2hrs of my life
Winter soldier is one of the better movies that I've seen in the Marvel universe so far (in timeline order, not release order) it kept me engaged and interested the whole time.
I appreciate the entrance of Anthony mackie's character. I will say that Marvel has a magical negro problem so far fury saved Captain Marvel. Don cheadle helps Iron Man, Falcon helps Captain America. Thor doesn't have a magical negro (yet?) Can we be the main hero for a few films
And before you start saying Black panther I haven't gotten there yet and that's only one movie and a whole Marvel universe full of White characters.
Samuel L Jackson is not cussing enough for me though. Fury needs to be cussing left and right.
Guardians of the Galaxy 1 is up next. I don't think I'll get through part 2 tonight. I don't know anything about this film except for I am Groot whatever that means and people thinking it was funny
Guardians of the Galaxy here we come! See you in 2hrs with my thoughts
I hated it absolutely trash. guardians of the Galaxy part 1 didn't know if it wanted to be a action movie or a comedy so it failed at both however my cousin is in the movie and I didn't know that until I saw him so bravo to him! It definitely felt like a bridge movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy was starting to pull together the concept of Thanos infinity Stones future impending war all of that but as a movie itself it's not important to me nor was it good
Also I now know which Chris's are good ones in Marvel and which Chris's are bad and the bad Chris was in the guardians of the Galaxy and it's a bad movie but now that I know he's the bad Chris it made the movie even worse.
My cousin (Sharif Atkins) was the pilot who arrested the Zoe Saldana from a spacecraft in the movie, here's the still. That was the highlight of the movie for me.
9 more movies to go! I appreciate seeing Stan Lee in most of them.
Guardians of the Galaxy part 2 in a few minutes...I really wish there was something else in between part one and part two but this is the cinematic timeline so hopefully it gets better. Grimacing faceCrossed fingers Zoe Saldana is still fine even if she's green.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is leaps and bounds better than part 1 still totally a fluff movie in the overall universe but it gets Thanos' backstory more involved. Sylvester Stallone looked great. And even in outer space they casted mostly white people and just painted them SMH
Avengers age of Ultron is up next! I am so glad to get away from the Guardians of the Galaxy! I am interested to see how they show up later on with the whole end-game war thingy because it really doesn't make sense at the moment
Age of Ultron was just a special effects wet dream because the plot really wasn't the main selling point. The Olsen twin sister looks like them but healthy. And this is the first time they said end game and wakanda so now I see all the elements are starting to pull together
I also feel like the age of Ultron was littered with superheroes, there were so many people. I am not interested in the bow and arrow man no matter how many times and how many ways they try to sell him as a superhero
Oh I'm confused how Jarvis became vision and then how Iron Man got a new digital assistant, Vanessa I think. And Captain America slightly moved Thor's hammer so I'm assuming that's going to come up again but Jarvis-Vision can just pick it up with no problem. Idk
Ant-Man is up next and for some reason I'm not excited about this so I'm going to throw some chicken fries and Arby's curly fries in the air fryer while I watch.
Okay so I was wrong Ant-Man is a pretty good movie, my favorite filler movie so far! I didn't know the "hey look at us" guy was in this and Anthony Mackie was in it and Garrett Morris was in it and Wood Harris and TI and Michael Douglas. Now I want to see Ant-Man part 2
Ant-Man was basically Honey I shrunk the kids but for superheroes.
Just finished Captain America Civil war which is really an avengers movie. I feel like I've turned the corner and it should be a straight shot from here to the end game movie I think all of the major players are now introduced throughout the Marvel universe. 6 more to go!
It also is not lost on me that up until this point Civil War has had the most Black people in it with falcon, war machine and black panther. I know that changes once we get to wakanda but still. Even in the imagination of comics people Black people are in the minority.
Black Panther is up next I saw most of this on a plane to Hawaii but I fell asleep so this is going to be a bit of a refresher. I didn't see it when it came out because I wanted to wait till the crowds died down and then they never died down.
Black panther is so hard to watch now because of Chadwick. It's a beautiful film. Angela Bassett with gray hair makes me wish she would have played Storm. I also wish that they would have given killmonger a redemption arc like Bucky.
You can also tell they put a lot more thought and effort into the Black panther than the other movies in the cinematic universe it was clearly designed to be a standalone in comparison because you don't have strong connections to the other movies or characters.
I also want one of those over the shoulder scarfs that he wears in the movie because I would throw that on just to go to the store. I need this in every color and every pattern. And maybe a thicker one for the winter months as a poncho replacement, like Daniel's tribe wore.
One thing that I really appreciated about Black panther was when both killmonger and T'challa went into the ancestral realm they did not have to agree with the ancestors and just because they were dead did not mean that they were right or smart. I think people miss that part.
I just watched Dr. Strange, I specifically went to the movie theater to go see it by myself I think cuz I wanted to. It's still a great movie! Watching it in the timeline I picked up on so many other things they talked about infinity Stones there was a Captain America reference
See. I loved it way back in then. They did a really good job with basic metaphysical and mystical concepts regarding the mind and reality time and space https://twitter.com/FirstGentleman/status/794986889589628928?s=20
They still have a magical negro problem in the character of Master Mordo. Doctor strange has Mordo, Captain Marvel has Maria Rambo, Iron Man has war machine, Captain America has falcon. The Black characters are always the sidekick, best friend.
Thor and Doctor strange having a meeting at the end of the movie is what sealed it for me because those are my two favorite characters in this universe at the moment so I would like to see more of them together
Also Dr Strange has the best acting of any movie in the cinematic universe so far. Benedict Cumberbatch and Chiwetel Ejiofor are giving you a British acting master class in this film!
Just watch Thor Ragnarok. Marvel finally got how to do an action comedy they have been trying with Guardians of the Galaxy. But it all came together in this movie. It also did a really good job of acting a tie in movie cuz you had doctor strange and the hulk involved.
Can we talk about Tessa Thompson because yes everything about her is yes. Also Jeff goldblum, loved it and Idris Elba, loved it. There are a lot of great supporting characters in this one. People I don't know and like which says a lot cuz I don't know anybody in movies.
One of the things that I thought was funny was Idris had dreadlocks because he had been in exile and I was like they have Black barbershops and Asgard? He had a fade when Odin was on the throne and then all of a sudden boom one movie later, locs. Hair must grow fast on Asgard.
Loki is one of those characters that you love to hate. I want to see him do good but I know that he's not going to do good for long so I'm pretty sure he took the infinity stone from the palace. I also noticed the hulk is able to control his powers better in this movie.
