As dark as 2020 was, I hope we never forget the sense of possibility that this year conjured. Nothing is impossible anymore. We were told that UBI was a distant possibility, but yet governments worldwide raced to send monthly checks to their citizens. /1
Universal remote work was laughed at pre-2020 or mooted as an eventual trend, but became the stunning default within weeks. Even at the darkest moments in March, somehow the homeless epidemic was somehow rationalized away, with shelters expanded and hotel rooms found. /2
A vaccine was supposed to take years of painstaking development, but was even perfected within the first month of the crisis alone, and distribution is now rolling out in the billions of doses over the next year. /3
This year was a revolution against that hollow concept of "normal". As we turn the page towards 2021, we should reject those who call for a return of "normalcy". "Normal" was functionally ill, we should aim for better and never forget that our societies are collective choices. /4
The 21st century has truly begun. /5
