Ladies.
1) My best friend from high school got married and had her first child the second year we graduated.
At the time, I thought she was so foolish and throwing her life away. She was so smart! Had so much potential! She even wanted to study law! It didn't make sense!
2) We disconnected for a while. I felt we had little in common as she settled into married life with her HS love and I went to university.
We reconnected again in our mid-twenties. She was so happy - her son was about to start prep, had a part time job, a wonderful husband.
3) And I was going through what was probably my most darkest period. My mid-twenties were awful. I worked, worked, worked - that's all I did.
I looked at my friend, saw how happy she was, how fulfilled, and I began to wonder - was it all worth it?
4) Suffice to say, my friend has a daughter as well, and her son is now a teenager. Her and her husband travel, they go on cruises, they really and truly embrace life.
While I used to think she threw her life away, I realise now that her choices were right.
5) And perhaps it was me that got it wrong back then. Or at least, my thinking and perceptions of life were wrong.
The moral: do what makes you happy. But never forget: family and marriage is everything. A career can come later.
