Ok, I feel like I need to clarify this a bit.

The trap with resolutions (and goal setting in general) is that people often do it without an effective engine behind it.

The engine is your routine.

Also note that a plan and a routine are not the same. https://twitter.com/operaqueenie/status/1343315829048320001
I don't know if ya'll are tired of hearing me say this yet, but I'm sure it's coming in 2021....

The process is equally as important (if not more) as the product.

Goals are good to give you direction, but it's not particularly helpful to think of them as your destination.
Goals are fleeting. Like, what happens after achieve it. What then?

You are not your goals, you are the sum of your actions.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.” -- Aristotle
One of my favorite books is "Atomic Habits" by @JamesClear.

I think he's really good at explaining the correlation between getting the things we want and the actions we repeat.
Desire alone won't get you there.

A short-lived set of actions won't either.

It's the repetition of perpetual, effective actions that makes you who you are, and allows you to achieve the long term gains you seek.
I successfully lost 30+ lbs and kept it off a few years ago by making changes to my routine and my entire lifestyle.

The weight I've gained this year is because my routine has gone to complete shit. https://twitter.com/operaqueenie/status/1343319061359312896
The hard part about setting and maintaining a routine/system that helps you achieve your goals is the mental load.

Everything you "care about" is arguably something you are willing to put effort into getting/maintaining. That takes time and energy. Money can also help.
But this year threw a bunch of new and heavy shit on everyone's plates. We're all doing what we can to make it.

I had to re-prioritize the things that got my time and energy. Meal planning, cooking, and the principled mentality of "eating right" was not high on the list. 🤷🏾‍♀️
We all have a limit. So if you're going to spend time designing your life, focus on the (daily) HOW over the WHAT.

For me, seeing the erosion of the parts of me I typically care about has me doing some end of year reflecting on the 2021 routine.
I know it sounds obvious, but I cannot overstate how many folks don't actually take the time to "reverse engineer" the routine/systems required to actually achieve a goal. https://twitter.com/vanessamason/status/1343347636733059072
You don’t rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems.

Habits may seem insignificant or small a first, but it is powerful when compounding. Little habits are the building blocks of remarkably big results. @JamesClear
