With the U.S. bracing for a post-Christmas surge in Covid cases and the U.K. battling with harsh lockdown restrictions, life in the West feels far from normal.

Meanwhile, to put it bluntly, life in Taiwan this year has been ridiculously normal https://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
. @tculpan was at Hong Kong airport the morning the U.S. reported its first Covid-19 case.

By the time he landed at JFK airport, Chinese authorities had shut down Wuhan in an admission that this virus was serious and spreading. That move was far too late http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
Taiwan, by comparison, was well-ahead of the game:

➡️3 days earlier, Taiwan had set up its Central Epidemic Command Center
➡️3 weeks earlier, Taipei had sent an inquiry to the WHO asking for clarification of this pneumonia-like disease out of China http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
While cities from New York to London to Melbourne went into shutdown, Taiwan stayed open for business.

Two Pride parades were held this year in Taipei while the same event was cancelled in almost every other city around the world http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
In the past few months @tculpan has:

🏃🏻‍♂️Joined music festivals and marathons
🏊🏼‍♂️Swum in public pools
🏋🏻‍♂️Worked out at the gym
🍻Had drinks at packed bars
🍽Attended banquet dinners http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
Taiwan residents have mixed emotions watching the world go into meltdown while they enjoy life here in their happy little bubble, says @tculpan.

“Pride is tempered by a sense of survivor’s guilt” http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
The proof of Taiwan’s success is in the numbers. As of Dec. 28th:

➡️793 cases
➡️7 deaths
➡️90% of patients brought the virus from overseas
➡️Taiwan GDP is expected to grow by 2.5% http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
Receiving much of the plaudits for this is President Tsai Ing-wen. While well-deserved, health minister Chen Shih-chung should be applauded.

His popularity rose so high that concerned citizens wrote letters urging him to take a break to protect his health http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
In a veritable gangsta move, Chen and his team held a press conference wearing pink masks after reports that male students wouldn’t wear the color out of fear they’d be bullied.

Pink subsequently became the hippest color covering faces across the country https://twitter.com/MPWangTingyu/status/1249593329089576963?s=20
Taiwan’s most popular ally in building trust and a sense of community has been the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s official “spokesdog,” a Shiba Inu named Zongchai, who graces social media posts with reminders to wash hands or maintain social distancing http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
Early on, Taiwan restricted entry for passengers from Wuhan, then all of China, and eventually the entire world.

Today, the narrow group who are allowed in are required to quarantine for 14 days under the threat of heavy fines http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
As Americans refuse the most basic of precautions under the pretense of freedom, Taiwan know what real freedom looks like:

The ability to have a drink at a bar without fear of catching a deadly airborne illness http://trib.al/CdXi0Tc
