THREAD: Since #StateCollege had its 2nd biggest December snowstorm on record a couple weeks ago, I looked at seasonal snowfall in seasons when a top 10 Dec snowstorm occurred. History says snow-lovers have reasons to be excited (1/n) #pawx
#StateCollege only has 5 "snow seasons" (Oct-Apr) with 90"+ of snow since 1893. A big December snowstorm occurred in 3 of the 5 (Dec of 1992, 1995, and 1960). Each of those seasons also had a NESIS Cat 4 or 5 storm later, which dropped double-digit snows in Central PA (2/n) #pawx
#StateCollege only has 12 "snow seasons" (Oct-Apr) on record with 70"+ of snow since 1893. Almost half of them (5 to be exact) occurred in years with a big December snowstorm. (3/n) #pawx
Of the years with the top 10 December snowstorms in #StateCollege, 8 of them ended up with at least 50" of snow. Avg is 45.6". Even the 2 seasons that didn't make it to 50" were greater than 40"...so near avg. (4/n) #pawx
Bottom line: Big December snows in #StateCollege have often historically signaled big snow seasons locally overall, including some of the top snow years and other big snowstorms later in the season. #pawx -fin.
