Not sure if the EU realizes how much damage it is doing to its interests in the US with the investment pact w/ China. Right at the moment when many of us are saying that strategic autonomy is a positive, someone from the EEAS is quoted as saying this is autonomy in action...
....basically guaranteeing US opposition. The other justification is that Trump struck his own deal in January so this is catch up. The irony of the EU using Trump to justify a unilateral action to a new administration is not lost on people. The Biden team made clear ...
... that they would prefer to work together and the EU decided to go it alone. Overall this just makes EU offers of a renewed partnership sound insincere. I’m sure Biden will work to revitalize transatlantic relations but this episode is unquestionably damaging....
....and will have many justifiably asking if it’s worth Biden’s time placing a big bet on Europe. The alternative is to have modest expectations and focus more on Asia where the allies and partners actually want to work together on China.
