Encouraging that the policy for Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine appears to be moving to prioritise getting the crucial first dose to people. https://twitter.com/natashac/status/1344177494052769792
On that topic: https://twitter.com/jimbethell/status/1344180346716356608?s=21 https://twitter.com/jimbethell/status/1344180346716356608
To paraphrase JVT, if not exactly a yoghurt, the Oxford vaccine is at least quite a lot more yoghurtish in the conditions it can put up with and still be usable, which makes a big logistical difference. https://twitter.com/ariehkovler/status/1344176705083236352?s=21 https://twitter.com/ariehkovler/status/1344176705083236352
As previously noted there’s not much point just going “DO IT FASTER”, but a lot of point in working out what might hold up mass vaccination, what might facilitate more and faster jabs, and watching other countries to learn +ve and -ve lessons.
For eg, Israel clearly has lessons for us in how to vaccinate lots of people even with the tricky to handle Pfizer jab. 24/7 vaccination centres seem a good idea, given the requisite trained staff (more on this below). https://twitter.com/ariehkovler/status/1343984484446822401?s=21 https://twitter.com/ariehkovler/status/1343984484446822401
And there are also other things to learn - eg Israel has had more ease reaching those in their 60s than in targeting older seniors https://twitter.com/ariehkovler/status/1343985425380208640?s=21 https://twitter.com/ariehkovler/status/1343985425380208640
As @hwallop asks, quite reasonably, given everyone agrees this is a huge priority, the question is what might be the bottlenecks in getting the Oxford vaccine out? https://twitter.com/hwallop/status/1344180312130150400?s=21 https://twitter.com/hwallop/status/1344180312130150400
It could be the supply of people to give the vaccine, given the skills required are a bit more than a lay person might guess. https://twitter.com/stokel/status/1343842711166705665?s=21 https://twitter.com/stokel/status/1343842711166705665
It could be logistics of the vaccine itself. But the tricky to manage Pfizer vaccine is the one that Israel’s used to vaccinate a lot of people.
It could be supply of the vaccine - Oxford/AZ ought to ease that, but there are reportedly possible shortages of glass vials to put it in. https://twitter.com/declamare/status/1343815819042693121?s=21 https://twitter.com/declamare/status/1343815819042693121
