True story:
At 21, I found myself in DT Chicago, on my way to an interview for an Account Manager role, wearing a ill-fitted thrift shop suit, when suddenly I was hassled by a panhandler begging for money.
I looked at his cup of change.
Saw probably $3 of quarters in it

"No way dude, you literally have more money than me"
I cleaned out the rest of my checking account to get there.
I never had much money growing up.
At the time, I lived in a rundown studio apartment in a not so great part of town.

No heat, no A/C, bugs, and drugged out homeless dudes sleeping in the hallway during the winter were my reality.
If someone told me I would have been doing 7 figures in sales & bringing home over 100k in a little more than a year from that point...

I wouldn't have believed them.
But it happened.
No matter what background you come from, sales is the ultimate equalizer.
Sales can be a golden path to financial freedom.
But it's not for everyone.
In fact, most people aren't cut out for it.

If it was easy, AEs wouldn't be some of the highest comped employees in the workforce.
The reality of sales is that you must be constantly be producing or you will not last.

The high performers are rewarded greatly, the average performers usually don't stay in sales, and the below average performers are quick to be let go.
I'd be lying if I told you this wasn't a high pressure job.

The fact that you are 100% responsible for that direct deposit hitting your bank account...
The fact that you can only eat what you kill...
Is a burden too heavy for most to handle
But, some of us are... *built different*

If you thrive on high pressure, enjoy building relationships with high level executives, and have a knack for problem solving & persuasion - sales might be the right path for you.
Regardless of if you think sales is for you or not, you will absolutely need:
1. Emotional intelligence
2. The ability to read intent

2. The ability to read intent
Emotional intelligence:
If you have low emotional intelligence, you will fail spectacularly.
When the odds are stacked against you and failure to hit quota is seeming more likely by the day, you can not let an ounce of that desperation bleed out into your interactions.

You might be fucked, but as far as your prospect is concerned, business is great & you're most definitely not desperate for the sale.
When they talk to you, they feel good.
They cannot sense even the slightest bit of unease in your tone.

No matter how many no's you get & how many deals you lose, you need to be able to maintain the *exact* same high enthusiasm & energy at all times.
If you take rejection personally, you won't make it.
Rejections should do nothing but motivate you to keep going.

Emotional intelligence is vital for success in sales, but it's also mandatory for maintaining good health while you're in the game
Ask yourself this: how worth it is the money if you have a heart attack or stroke in your 40s?

Even if you maintain generally good health while dealing with chronic stress, do you really want to look old when you're old?
Or do you want to be that 50 yr old everyone thinks is 35?
This career path is only worth it if you can properly manage stress

Reading intent:
What people say & what they're thinking are 2 completely different things.
You need to know what people are truly thinking/feeling to effectively build rapport, address their fears, overcome objectives, and make them feel good about the decision to purchase.

"This is a great solution, but we are so busy with other projects that we will need put it on the backburner"
"We love this solution, but the price is out of our budget range"
Are you going to take these at face value?
