Norman doorway at St Lawrence's old church ( @TheCCT), York. Formerly the N doorway, reset in the E wall of the tower when the rest of the church was demolished c.1881 as the new church was built on ground then acquired from the feoffees immediately to the S.
OS Map 1852 shows the 'ancient' burial ground of St Lawrence's, with its principal entrance in the C19 most likely being the N. The pump facing busy Lawrence St (main access into city from E) on the map can be seen here in a watercolour by Charles Dillon c.1830.
August 1853 - granted pretty much on the eve of the closure of ancient burial grounds in York - new burial ground to the S. The Order in Council for the city of York stated St Lawrence's (outside walls too) as the only parochial space allowed to continue with burials by law.
At a later date, prior to 1881, the land to the S of that mapped here in the 1853 plan was acquired from the feoffees and the new church built. Photo here shows today the outline of the old church preserved & new church behind.
The expansion and development of St Lawrence's site has always grabbed me for some reason. The monument clearance, old boundary wall survival, etc. I've probs tweeted all this before but oh well.

Here's a view today/corresponding spot on 1852 (surveyed 1849>) map.
