2020. What a time to be working as a reporter. After a year of writing story after story about horrible tragedies, I'd like to take a moment to share some of the good news I got to report on this year.
My first story of the year was about @SoberCityHFX, a resource for people getting sober, staying sober, or who are simply "sober-curious." https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/sober-city-halifax-quit-drinking-1.5406539
In the early days of the pandemic, people harnessed the power of social media to find ways to help each other through COVID-19. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/nova-scotia-helping-eachother-covid-19-1.5499230
I chuckled a lot while writing this story about a man who pitched a tent on land and woke up floating in water. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/cape-breton-road-trip-camping-gone-wrong-cobequid-1.5718982
I talked to a teenager who is working with gamers from around the world to build the world in Minecraft. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/halifax-teen-working-build-the-earth-minecraft-1.5764364
This Nova Scotia man fixes up old guitars and gives them to kids in need. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/guitarz-for-kids-project-strikes-a-chord-budding-musicians-1.5784972
... because what reporter HASN'T written a story about a baby being born in an odd place? https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/woman-gives-birth-ns-convenience-store-1.5791838
This beautiful new art installation in Halifax celebrates chosen family and LGBTQ2+ visibility. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/new-lgbtq2-art-halifax-visibility-chosen-family-1.5796616
And lastly, for my most recent article, I spoke with Abdul Jalab, a Syrian refugee who found a home in Nova Scotia. He's giving back to the community during COVID-19. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-scotia/thank-new-community-syrian-refugee-gives-back-1.5827914
As we close out this cursed year, I'm thinking of the many people who have lost loved ones, both to COVID-19 and to the many tragedies that fell on Nova Scotia. I'm also thinking of all the people working to keep us healthy and safe. Here's hoping for a less terrible 2021.
