As 2020 ends, with a better 2021 coming, here’s what makes me grateful about democracy:

#1: I’m grateful for the voters of Minnesota.

Despite a once-in-a-century pandemic, our voters leaned in, stepped up, and set records; best in voter turnout for the 3rd election in a row!
#2: I’m grateful for fantastic partners across Minnesota.

Counties, cities, and townships drive the election process. They handled the pressure and unpredictability of 2020 brilliantly, delivering security and integrity.
#3: I’m grateful for our brave poll workers.

We need 30,000 poll workers to make our polling places run smoothly. We got them all to show up this year despite potential risks. They deserve our thanks.
#4: I’m grateful for an important outbreak of bipartisanship at the legislature.

With bipartisan support, and after a lot of negotiation, the legislature last spring enabled a more flexible administration of the election during the pandemic. It worked!
#5: I’m grateful for an amazing team.

The staff at the Office of Secretary of State is second to none. Talented, focused, hard-working, creative, flexible, and calm. They own a huge part of the success of the 2020 election.
#6: I’m grateful for truth-tellers.

In 2020, there was a tidal wave of disinformation about elections. Many people successfully confronted and rebutted the inaccuracies and conspiracies, sometimes at personal risk. They deserve our admiration. https://www.governing.com/security/CISA-Director-Chris-Krebs-Fired-Over-Election-Dispute.html?AMP
#7: I’m grateful for the courts.

Our office won some and lost some in court. Regardless, our independent judiciary was a shining example of what worked for democracy this year. The rule of law prevailed.
