That missed year, all of that missing data/info on guys....

I've been thinking a lot lately about not even updating the Reds prospect rankings because of it. There's just so much unknown.

Am definitely ready to see what 2021 baseball looks like in the minors, though. https://twitter.com/drivelinebases/status/1345142586227376128
As silly as it is, prospect rankings are a staple for traffic. They are big when released, but it is also one of the bigger recurring traffic things - and one of the very few that hold long term value in sports media.

But this year just makes it so different.
For some guys, we were able to get real information on. Guys that played at least a little in the bigs. Some guys were at the alternate site and I could talk to people who had data/eyes on them. Some guys, though very few, played winter ball.

Most guys? They didn't do that.
We don't really know how their "2020 year" went. It's a lot easier to get info on a pitcher's 2020 even if they didn't "play". If a guy picked up velo, he knows. They probably threw, somewhere, around a Trackman/Rapsodo. They can record/share that data.
What about a position guy? Did they improve their footwork and now that defensive issue is no longer there? Did the work in the cage pay off, but we just don't know yet?
There are just so many unknowns - heck, there are even a lot of unknowns among guys we actually did see some of this year on the field - that I'm just hesitant to toss my rankings back out there. There's so much more data on certain guys than others that it feels "unfair".
I'm always going to have more info on some players than others. Whether it's because I've seen them more, they've been around longer, someone I talk to just happened to talk about them the day we were talking and it put them on the radar more than player xyz.... that happens.
But right now, with how 2020 plays out, this is just different. This isn't a "maybe I could have done more homework on a guy who would have been ranked 17th instead of 31st". There's just no actual information on like 60% of the organization from 2020 outside of ST.
And spring training for the minor leaguers never even reached the point in which they were playing games against other teams.

It just feels a lot like things would be weighed far too much on some guys we know things about, be it good or bad.
But also being completely in the dark on so many players in the organization.

I dunno. Just talking this all out loud. I'm finished for now.
