I want to expand a little bit on this. I have been following a lot of brilliant white researchers from developed & privileged countries going to developing & underprivileged countries doing their research & talking about their science. Great! But... (1/n) #ColonialConservation https://twitter.com/Herpomania/status/1345406383496122369
A very few of these brilliant (mostly) white scientists talk about the work they do to help and assist the scientific community in these countries that quite often do not have the resources (finances, infrastructure, etc) like you. (2/n) #ColonialConservation
I want to hear about your efforts at capacity building the young talent in these countries & places u go. If u are hiring regional ('local') staff as 'field assistants' & then leave them behind in the same state as when u joined them, u are nothing but a modern colonialist (3/n)
Notice that I used the word 'joined' them and not the word 'started' because quite often (most often) white privileged researchers merely join ongoing regional conservation programs in less privileged countries, publish papers, and move on. (4/n) #ColonialConservation
They may add regional researchers as authors in these papers, but does that mean that they helped build the capacity in scientific research and publications? Not always. So when you go to less privileged country, & use their human & natural resource,...(5/n) #ColonialConservation
It is also your responsibility to ensure that you contribute to the scientific and conservation community of that region. (6/n) #ColonialConservation
