The NRA is or has been under investigation by Congress, by state lawmakers and by the IRS for financial misconduct, campaign finance violations, and for serving as a foreign asset to Russia. Yet many Republicans and pundits did their bidding - or their candidates did - for years.
“Trumpism is an American autocratic movement with Fascistic markers.” Yes - and open carry, permitless carry, guns at protests and rallies, laws like Stand Your Ground - all NRA priorities - served to turbocharge that movement. The NRA gave Trump millions of dollars for a reason.
Some Republican leaders and pundits have told me they looked the other way on guns because they had to tolerate the extremism in exchange for progress on other issues. NOW is the time to finally disavow the NRA’s extremist agenda, which is not compatible with a healthy democracy.
