I've had the best luck dying the semi- pearlecent cheap buttons with cheap rit dye, but its easy to dye them too dark within seconds so be careful.
If you dont have a daiso near by, they have an online store now although they only do large batch sales. But if you need something
Cosplay or prop related in large numbers, definately worth a look!
