12 Jyotirlinga Sthanas in Bharatabarsha.
'Jyotirlinga' in Sanskrit is combination of 'Jyoti' means Radiance & Linga the sign of Shiva.

Thus Jotirlinga is radiant sign of Shiva ,A shrine where Mahadev Shiva worshiped in the form of fiery column of light .
According to Shiva Mahapuran Shiva first manifested himself as a 'Jyotirlinga' on the night of the Ardra Nakshatra in Purnima/pratipada of Margashira month, thus the special reverence for the Jyotirlinga.

Once there was a argument between BRAHMA & VISHNU that who is supreme in
in this creation.

To test them Shiva formed himself into a huge pillar of Light. Shri Vishnu & Bramha split their way in either direction of the Light pillar to finds its end
Finaly they couldn't able to find the end.
Mahadev shiva appear before them as a second pillar of light
