Mental health.
Mental wellness.
Mental illness.
All important, all related, but not all the same.
As we kick off 2021 and head back to work (whether from home or in the office), a few words (perhaps this is just an open letter to myself): https://twitter.com/comd_mpc/status/1346112024686817280

First off, I am not an expert in mental health but I am working to become an expert in my own mental health. I have a lived experience with depression & anxiety and I know the impact it can have on work, family and physical health. Along the way, I’ve learned a few things.
Mental health is something we all have and good mental health is something that we can all try to achieve....but it takes time, commitment and hard work.
Mental health is not the same as mental illness, although poor mental health can lead to mental and physical illnesses.

Mental wellness is about more than just the absence of mental illness. It’s about living and coping despite the ups and downs life throws at us.
So what?
So what?
You know you best.
I am not big on New Year’s resolutions but the start of a new year is as good a time as any to check in on yourself.
How are you doing? How are you feeling? How are you coping? What is bothering you? Do you need support or help?
Be honest with yourself.

In 2020, did your health (physical or mental) always take a backseat?
Just one more email. Just 10 more minutes.
No time to go to gym today, maybe tomorrow.
A working lunch (again)
I don’t need breaks, I’ll just push on.
Give it a front row seat in 2021.

Model the behaviour you want to see.
If we don’t want our employees checking emails at night, why do we?
If we send an email in evening, are we expecting the recipient to do something with it?
Can it wait until morning?
Again #EasierSaidThanDone.

Check in with your Team.
Ask teammates how they are doing. Then listen. Really listen. Don’t just go with pleasantries and the standard “how are you?” then move on to business. We’ve all done it.
Take the time to listen. It matters & will be appreciated.

If everything is a priority, nothing is a priority.
No surprises here...too much work, too few people, too many high priorities.
Let’s help each other & set ambitious but realistic work objectives. Challenge each other and your boss. In the end, it helps.

Language matters.
“Don’t be crazy!”
“Are you crazy?”
“Are you mental?”
“That’s depressing”
We’ve all heard or said these. But they play into the stigma associated w/mental illness.
Let’s work together to create a healthy, safe and inclusive workplace.

It’s not easy to ask for help.
It takes courage. What can you expect in return? Unconditional support (without judgement) from friends, family, co-workers, your chain of command & Health Services. A unified goal - to help & support you.
People care. #SpreadTheWord

Mental illness is an equal opportunity illness...it does not discriminate.
Look after yourself. Check in with your teammates. Hey, take the time to check in with your boss too!
You’ve heard the expression before - “We’re all fighting battles no one knows about”.

There is no secret recipe or checklist for perfect mental health and wellness. Perfection does not exist.
But there are opportunities to improve our health and positively contribute to the health of our workplace and teammates. That is something I want to do!
Are you with me?
