Dear @jkenney,

Returning all grades to in-person on Monday is a mistake.

Now before you call me hysterical, please listen to somebody who masks up and steps into a classroom every day.

A THREAD.

Teachers and others have been critical of the provincial reentry plan not because they are hysterical, as you suggest, but because the plan was sorely lacking.

We were concerned that COVID would spread in schools (it has).

2/
We were worried that students and staff would get sick in their place of learning.

We called on you to make common-sense investments in safety to save people's lives, and you called us hysterical.

While people were hospitalized and the death rate soared, you ignored us.

We don't want to be doing remote online teaching. Trust me. It is so much harder for us than in person. Don't call us lazy, because that's bullshit.

We want the best, most stable learning environment for our students, and we want our students to be safe.

4/
Because since the second week of September I've had at least one student isolating at all times, and often many. Entire classes isolating, teachers teaching from their homes.

It's chaotic.

With our case load now? It will be much worse.

5/
We need to return to in-person once the R value shrinks further and the active cases drop to a point where we can be in person without students and staff ping-ponging in and out of school.

6/
My fear is that cases will start to creep up again, and we'll find ourselves shut down suddenly again before June.

Why? June is a long ways away. We are in the shitty groove of online learning now, and we can all pitnour heads down and keep doing it a little longer.

7/
And maybe, just maybe, get the cases down enough that we can stay in person for the second half of the year.

If we maintain some common sense restrictions. And we all decide to not go to Hawaii for a few months.

8/
Or you could also maybe make a modicum of effort to make schools safer, but I've given up on asking for that.

So @jkenney, let us make school work for kids as best we can.

Online learning is so much work, but I'm good at it, and I will keep doing it to keep people safe.
