I've been trying to figure out just WHAT the strategy behind making (nominally) Black Enrique Tario the head of the (functionally) White supremacist Proud Boys was. I think I see it.
As I understand it, under federal law, hate crimes are felonies.
White members of the Proud Boys could ostensibly face hate crime charges for doing something like defacing Black churches and burning #BLM signs.
A Black offender, OTOH, couldn't be.

I'm guessing Tario had been planning on falling on his sword in this manner quite often. I'm guessing these are his chief executive functions: to act as both a shield, and a cudgel.
And, Tario is just as anti-Black as his Proud Boys compatriots. Which...I don't...have the time/gut strength to hash out.
But I get it. Tario's placement is about optics, sure. But it's also about committing racially-driven hate crimes and not going to prison for them.
