So far he has been bad. There is no other way to dress it up, however, it would be a lie to say there is no sign of potential.
He’s hit the woodwork more times than any other PL player (5), in another world these all go in, he’s on 9 NPG in the league and everyone’s lauding Lampard for playing him wide and he’s one of the signings of the season…
Let’s look at a couple of Werner’s underlying numbers compared to his performance:

It’s pretty obvious he’s underperforming, and it’s clear goals will start coming again soon.
And goals at his expected rate is a decent return. A non pen goal close to every over 90 is decent.

But, the big issue with Werner is that outside of goals - he offers us nothing.
Timo’s game is very limited.
He can’t playmake, he can’t dribble, he can’t hold up the ball, he can’t link up play better than our other forwards, he has no first touch, makes awful decisions and he can’t cross.
This isn’t good.

For Werner to have a positive impact on us, he has to score goals - lots of them, because that’s his only real way of influencing a game.
So what’s the best way to get him these goals?
The first thing I’d do, take him out the team for a while. His confidence is shot, take him out for a long while and slowly re introduce him.

I’d then also carefully manage what games he plays.
Deep block sides, with limited space in behind? He should not be starting these games.
Nagelsmann himself said it, he’s uselsss v low blocks. His game relies on his speed to get into space, if there’s no space - he’s useless.

Based on pure ability, he’s not in our best front 3.

He’s still our best goal outlet from wide, he will probably be our best goal scoring winger, and we can use this to our advantage in the squad.
Werner can play all across the front 3, and will score a decent amount of goals across a season.

He’s also an excellent option to have from the bench.
Imagine we’re defending a lead, sitting back a bit - and we bring Werner on to counter against a tired defence, he would feast.

Force feed him Son compilations, that should be the blueprint, and eventually he will start scoring goals.
Son’s game is very simple for Tottenham - get in behind, score goals.

I think the criticism of him playing on the left is silly, but he shouldn’t be hugging the touchline, he‘s not got the game to do that.
Don’t have him pretend to be something he’s not.
Get him running in behind, focusing purely on scoring goals - nothing else.

So do I think he’s a great signing? not necessarily, but do I think he can be a useful player for us? 100%
Use him right, as a rotation option and a bench option, and he will provide a service, and be a useful player for us.
Remember it’s his first season and he’s still young.
