Today while I was writing, I thought of the song "Hang onto your Ego" by the Beach Boys.

To be Honest I had to look up the word "ego" to fully get it.

A thread:
1/ I knew what the word meant, but ego isn't something I'd spent a lot of time thinking about.

Maybe this means I currently have a big ego problem and simply never realized it.

I was curious...
2/ The definition: a person's sense of self-esteem or self-importance.

In my notes I began to copy this down but I left off "self-esteem" because it's the same thing as "self-importance," right?
3/ Time for some more definitions:

Self-esteem: confidence in one's own worth or abilities; self-respect.

Self-Importance: a sense of one's own value or importance.
4/I've never struggled with being confident with myself

But when I think of all the different ways that negative emotions seem to seep into my life, they all seem to stem from an expectation for other people to see me for more than what they actually do.

Aka external validation
5/ Whether it's a boss, a friend, or an audience on twitter. I want to be valued by others more than I want to value myself.

And this point made me really glad that I didn't just clump "Self-esteem" and "self-importance" together to shorten a definition
6/ You see, "self-esteem" reflects a person's inward validation, while "self-importance" reflects their external validation.

Both valuable, yet individual assets to one's ultimate "ego."
7/ Both can be abused when under utilized or inflated. So the key lesson here is to not catch yourself sleeping on either half of the equation.

I was content with my self-esteem so I never considered my ego to be the cause to any of my problems.
8/ But once I considered all the ways that I was harboring a need to be validated by others, the explanations to my frustrations started pouring in.

My expectation wasn't being met, so it started to manifest in Jealousy, anger, despair, frustration, and laziness.
9/ I'm not telling you to care less about what people think of you or to value yourself blah blah blah.

I'm telling you to reflect.
10/The first step to fixing any problem is to understand it. for me, it started with a few definitions

The important part is the reflection. How does ego impact your life? What are you missing that's causing frustration? Is that brought on by your intentions or expectations?
11/ I hope for this short piece to be an encouragement to you:

To do a little "ego digging."

Once uncovered it might change your life.
