THREAD - Ropes for players are becoming smaller and smaller. How hard it is to play for India and how it is going to get harder and harder as we move ahead.
It was the 3rd Test in Aus in 2018 when Mayank Agarwal bailed India out from their opening woes. Made 76,42 and 77 in his first 3 innings . He has 2 double centuries and 1005 runs from just 21 innings in his short international career. He top scored in one of the innings v NZ.
Marnus Labushagne has had a similar start to his career like Mayank scoring at home and in one away series. However he is Australia's main batsmen currently and someone whom Australia actually depend on. Not the same case in India where we have 5 openers fighting for a spot.
Mayank's technique could be an issue. Guess he was focusing on improving his T20 power game once he thought he was assured his Test spot. Little would he have known that in 2 Tests that there is no assurance and it is cut throat competition. So hard to succeed in all 3 formats.
Exactly in the 3rd Test 2 years later India have replaced Mayank. They are changing a winning combination. They are doing this to accomodate a player who has never opened away from home and has not played a single FC match since Nov 2019 but could be an impact player.
The pressure on Rohit actually is immense considering he has never been a permanent member in the Test team but the expectations are always so high and he is replacing someone who actually has no major reason to be left out considering how the batsmen have fared this series.
Let us hope that Rohit shines and plays for the next few years . If Rohit has two poor Tests in Aus will his rope be shortened and will Mayank come back? I doubt it. Tough for Mayank but I guess thats how the sport is moving with three formats. Perform everytime or Perish.
The sad reality is that the rope for players is very short. Doubt anyone would have predicted Mayank to be axed after 2 Tests. The only way to survive is on Perceived Potential or Keep scoring big runs every time which not many can achieve in this Bowling dominated era.
