Very important thread. “Diverse” period dramas are a great idea but 1 question is ALWAYS essential before falling for the “post-racialist” fantasy: where does the money come from?
Any show that addresses this deserves all the accolades. #Bridgerton
was fun but... it does not

Tbh @beechamhouse is an excellent example of a diverse period drama that didn’t create a racial utopia OR rely on colour blind casting because the setting ensured we knew exactly where everyone’s money came from, who was complicit and who was not. The -
- upstairs/downstairs dynamic reflected class as well as race (even though the brown characters were rightfully so way more interesting than their white counterparts). However, it’s no surprise that something like the super sexy #Bridgerton
gets way more hype because -

- palatable diversity that doesn’t make white people uncomfortable but tricks them into thinking they’re allies just for sitting through the show sells way more than what @beechamhouse did (not that it was wholly successful, but points for trying way harder than #Bridgerton
did!)
