1. Today is my Birthday marking 35yrs on this planet. A few things to reflect, celebrate and learn.

circa 1987 in Bulawayo where my dad worked for decades. With my mother & a close relative. My mum became a great teacher for the person I became. Her work ethic was superb.
2. Circa 1990. In Bulawayo with my parents & sister. Those days we grew up in fascinating rural & urban areas. Both Economies were liquid & functioning. My dad was a shop floor worker though able to take care of his 8 kids.
3. Circa 1991. At our homestead in our village with two of my dad’s young brothers. A 📻 was treasured asset them in the village, people would walk from far afield to listen to the 📻. Used to walk around shirtless herding cattle etc. Families were very united then.
4. In 1992 enrolled at Mutemera Pry School in the capable hands of great teachers i.e Mutena, Nyepedzo, Muringisi, Mauswa, Mashangana. They taught us discipline, work ethics, living & working together & above all that the future depends on one’s actions & inactions.
5. 1999 enrolled at Betera Sec School some 10km away from our homestead. Everyday it was 4hrs of 🚶‍♀️ to & from school. I learned many things, made friends & was ultimately crowned Head Prefect by Chief Nyashanu, the headmaster then. Taught by Masara, Mungure, Nyamana, Sapote etc.
6. At Betera I was entrusted in2 leadership despite not 2 sure on handling the task. We quickly resolved to be interactive & always hear issues affecting learners. The wishes of learners became our command in engaging school authorities. Chief Nyashanu was always available 2 talk
7. I lived very far away from school & would wake up at 4am everyday. Many learners from other areas had this routine. We then brokered that affected learners should only be early for the start of lessons & not assembly. My deputy always covered for me since I couldn’t catch 8am
8. After completing O level, I proceeded to Muzokomba Govt School for Advanced level, some 40km from my village. Life changed completely, this school has no boarding facilities. Had to rent in nearby homesteads. There everything was tested: character, patience, determination etc.
9. At Muzokomba, I was immediately appointed Snr Prefect. I continued with my tradition of upholding the interests of learners. My tenure would be short. So many things bordered on bad school governance. We took those issues head on. Confrontation with authorities ensued.
10. Our student activism led to me being demoted from the Prefect body, suspended from school & canned inhumanely. The core team believed in good school governance & we paid the price for many. The school h/e changed many things for the better. We enjoyed the fruits of struggle
11. After passing A level, went to the University of 🇿🇼 where I learned planning. The Uni taught me working in teams, believing in one’s convictions, & that ideas for change & transformation are 🔑. We won the first universities debating championship & represented 🇿🇼 abroad.
12. From college @KudzaiChatiza2 took me to his private practice. He taught me so many things that helped shape my career. Moved from every corner of the country doing research work for local & international organizations. The experience shaped many of my ideas on devpt.
13. At graduate level as a @DAAD_Germany scholar, learned so many things in Germany. Key was international development with @chifundochilera. Our experiences in Germany and South Africa shaped our thinking on international development.
14. Decided to read for a PhD under @jayjayconslt a year after graduate school. We made headlines by completing in 2 years with 10 peer reviewed journal articles.
15. After PhD worked @UCT_news @UrbanAfricaACC. There learned so many things & conducted research in Windhoek, Lusaka & Maputo. I met so many city officials who narrated what is needed to transform African cities.
16. It was time to come back home & play my part. Worked with @DanChurchAid supporting urban social movements and city councils on research, evidence generation, lobbying & advocacy. Some include @ChraHarare @HarareResidents @wildtrustzim @UmrrtMutare & others.
