I used to call myself a conservative, believing that business, trade, the economy was more important than anything else and that the financial benefits would trickle down to everyone else.
And traditional conservatism defined as "2.
the holding of political views that favour free enterprise, private ownership, and socially traditional ideas." seems to support capitalism and social mobility...
the holding of political views that favour free enterprise, private ownership, and socially traditional ideas." seems to support capitalism and social mobility...
But the more people I have met in recent years, who aren't from the same background as me or don't live the same life as me, who have struggled consistently under the leadership of this party...
...the more I realise that the negative social effects of conservatism outweigh the economic benefits for us all. I truly believe now that the other definition of conservative: "1. commitment to traditional values and ideas with opposition to change or innovation."...
...is damaging society beyond repair. If this definition and the earlier economically focused one have to coexist then we will continue to become divided as the path to prosperity outlined by people scared of change.
And finally - it only ever seems to me that "trickle down" economics is something that disproportionately benefits those at the top of the pile... it seems to be self-interest masquerading as charity. It is false.
It's just not gone very well, has it?To be a conservative I understand now is to only care about oneself and ones own because you are too far removed from the negative impact of your world view on anyone different.
Anyway, I've just tried to make sense of why I now seen conservatism and the Conservatives as so detrimental to society as a whole. I'm sure there are lots of blind spots. I hope I've come across as critical rather than angry. I am angry, but I'm also trying to understand why.
