Yesterday's coup attempt or putsch was not unexpected. And it was pansy-ass and ineffectual.
But here's what hit me in the gut: how DEGRADING it was. Watching a mob scramble over the Capitol, hoisting Trump and Confederate flags, invading offices, made my skin crawl.

It was pansy-ass and ineffectual because Trump utterly lacked the support, organization, and resources that gives these things a whisper of a hope of success.
But what it produced, most of all, was to degrade our national image and self-image. In that regard, it was perhaps more powerful than many real and successful coups.
PS: this important thread suggests that the degradation was the point.
Also, while the coup failed utterly, it succeeded in making some very small people feel big enough to take over the capitol. As a result, I'm afraid this could just be the beginning. https://mobile.twitter.com/kathleen_belew/status/1347168470920794112
